In Honor of
Keith   Smette

Army Sgt. Keith Smette (center) with his brother
and sister, Robby and Sarah.

In February we learned that fan club member Army Sgt. Keith Smette, of the North Dakota National Guard, was killed January 24, 2004, in an explosives incident near Fallujah, Iraq. Through the message board fans expressed their thoughts, extending prayers and support to Keith's family and friends.

Below is a thread entitled "Messages To Family Of Fallen Warrior In Iraq". It is one of a number of message board threads started in memory of Keith Smette. Included here are but a few of the many responses of condolence to the Smette family.

I too would like to add my prayers and condolences at this time. I am so very sorry for your loss and pray that Robert will serve the remainder of his time in safety. Toby's warriors are special to him and I am sure he would be honored to know that your son admired him and his music. As a fellow warrior I would like you to know how much I appreciate the soldiers who fight and sometimes die for our freedom. Please know that that freedom is cherished. I fly my flag with pride and today that flag flies for your son, Keith. It will continue to fly as long as we have that freedom. That freedom is worth fighting for and unfortunately it is also worth dying for. Your son is a hero. I pray that you will be comforted with your loss and may the Lord bless you and keep you all in safety. Lots of love and HUGS coming your way.

Thoughts and Prayers from the Edwards Family to Staff Sgt Keith Smette's Family. I am not sure where this poem came from. I don't know who wrote it but it comes from the heart.

You're My friend,
my companion,
through good times
and bad
my friend,
my buddy,
through happy and sad,
beside me you stand,
beside me you walk,
you're there to listen,
you're there to talk,
with happiness,
with smiles,
with pain and tears,
I know you'll be there,
throughout the years!
You are all good friends to me
and I am grateful to you.

I work with veterans every day here at the VA. I have a great deal of respect for all they have done in the service to this great country. Keith has earned the utmost respect and gratitude for his ultimate sacrifice. My most humble and sincere condolences to his family.
